Rhythm Savvy

Rhythm puzzles for tuning your internal clock and building the groove in your playing

Your sense of time and rhythm is your most important jazz skill

This revolutionary book focuses on three critical areas of time that are critical for improvisation: Metronomic Rhythm, Groove Rhythm, and Phrase rhythm.

  • Strengthening your time is so much more than playing eighth notes with your metronome!

Using the book's 100 music tracks, practice with progressively more difficult exercises that build your internal clock and rhythmic accuracy for good time. You will be training in the art of hearing the flow of time, groove, and phrasing over longer and longer stretches.

What You Will Get

Progressively build your skills so that you are no longer locked into the
written note, memorized patterns, or the "right" scales.

The Audio Files

The 100 sound files for this book can be accessed through the Soundcloud playlist. Learn how to access these files and play them as you wish when you wish.

Metronomic Rhythm

You must first have a solid clock. Within this section, you will find lots of exercises that go well beyond the metronome work you've probably been practicing. Watch out for the Maniacal Metronome exercise!

Groove Rhythm

How's your groove? When you play, do you see people tapping their foot and bopping their head? That ability comes from listening to great players, but it also comes from hearing how to dance with the time. These examples and exercises will show you how.

Phrase Rhythm

There is an important rhythm in the phrases that make up your improvised solo. Here, you'll see examples and learn how to vary the rhythm of your lines like a great piece of poetry.

Elevate your practicing beyond quarter or eighth notes to a metronome

As a musician, you want to use time to tell interesting stories within your improvisation, not to become a metronome.

Possibly the most fundamental and important skill of any musician is their sense of time and rhythm. In this rich collection of exercises, audio files, and ideas, I break down the study of rhythm into the categories of Metronomic, Groove, and Phrase.

Fully addressing each category, the book guides the reader /performer through an ever broadening journey starting with self discovery of their own rhythmic acuity and ending with an analysis and challenge of performing connecting phrases defining a rhythmically musical whole.

Within this work, you will discover:

  • An accurate assessment of your own rhythmic sensibilities
  • Beneficial and more enjoyable ways to play with a metronome
  • A method for strengthening your performance skills in reacting to the rhythms around you
  • Effective ways to model favorite players in order to develop a more musical feel to your playing
  • A new way to think about the rhythm and pace of improvisation
  • By recording and practicing excellence, how you’ll gain the most from this book
